記号創発ロボティクスでは人間やロボットが環境とインタラクションとの中で動作や概念を獲得し，それを通して他者とインタラクションする中で記号や言語が生まれ，コミュニケーションが可能となると考えます．そのような過程で生まれた記号系（Symbolic System）が再び，今度はエージェントの行動に対する制約として作用し，全体として記号創発システムのミクロ・マクロループを形成します．表紙には，抽象的な記号創発システムのイメージ図を中心に，具体的な研究トピックとしての写真を外周に配しました．記号創発ロボティクスの狙いや研究トピックをイメージ的に把握いただければと思います（特集：「記号創発ロボティクス」pp. 544-625）．
