To examine the effects of compatibility feelings between type of scripts and words in Japanese writing, three preliminary experiments were conducted. Experiment 1 showed that university students possess different semantic images to Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana scripts and Experiment 2 suggested that the compatibility between semantic images of registered script type and those individuals was not so strong. In Experiment 3, effects of compatibility between the mental representations of famous person and semantic images of script types were investigated. Based upon these experiments, a tentative cognitive model for the choice mechanism is proposed.
