\nIn this talk, I will review the transformation brought about by deep learning over the past 12 years. Referencing my own research and focusing on dichotomies like passive versus active learning, and symbolic versus physical intelligence, I will analyze the reasons why the center of AI research is shifting towards industry. It is my view that the next AI breakthrough is more likely to emerge not from research labs, but from companies deploying products used at scale globally. Now that it\u2019s clear deep learning will significantly shape humanity\u2019s future, I urge it is time for more AI researchers to also focus on societal impact and take action beyond academic publications.\n<\/p>\n
\nShixiang Shane Gu is a Senior Staff Research Scientist in Google DeepMind, where he co-leads Gemini Multilinguality Team and develops modeling techniques in post-training, thinking, and multimodal training. Previously, he was Research Manager in ChatGPT team and head of Japan entry at OpenAI, a founding member of Google Brain Robotics, a Visiting Scholar at Stanford, and a Visiting Associate Professor at the University of Tokyo. Shane holds PhD in Machine Learning from the University of Cambridge and the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, supervised by Richard E.
